A lecturer from the University of Santiago leads workshops on financial literacy at ESTG

ESTG welcomed Lucía Rey Ares, from the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), as part of a teaching programme, during which she led three workshops for Erasmus students.

On 24 March 2026, the lecturer led the session ‘Financial Vulnerability of Spanish Households’, in which she presented an analysis of the financial vulnerability of Spanish households, addressing its definition, key indicators and determining factors. Topics discussed included the difficulty in meeting regular expenses, limited capacity to save and exposure to debt, as well as possible public policy measures and social protection initiatives.

On 26 March 2026, two further sessions took place. The first, entitled “The Role and Importance of Financial Literacy”, explored the concept of financial literacy and its key components—knowledge, attitudes and behaviours—highlighting its relevance to individual and collective financial well-being. The session also included an interactive activity based on a board game, encouraging active participation from the students.

During the second session of the day, “Financial Literacy in Spain: Evidence and Challenges”, data and evidence were presented on the level of financial literacy in Spain, analysing behaviours relating to saving, debt management and understanding investment concepts. The main challenges in this area were also discussed, including the relationship between financial literacy and vulnerability to fraud, as well as a brief comparison with the European context.

These initiatives reinforce ESTG’s commitment to internationalisation and the promotion of essential skills, providing students with an applied and up-to-date perspective on relevant topics in the field of economics and finance.
