Invited Speaker: Lucía Rey Ares, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain

Lucía Rey Ares is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain. She obtained her PhD in Economics and Business from the same university. Her teaching activity focuses on Financial Accounting and related subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Prior to joining the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela in 2022, she worked at the Universidade da Coruña. Her research interests focus on personal finance, particularly financial vulnerability and financial literacy. She has participated in several research projects and is the author and co-author of academic articles published in national and international journals in these fields.

Presentation Summary: This session provides an academic overview of financial vulnerability among Spanish households, examining its definition, main indicators and key determinants. It will present evidence on the extent of financial fragility in Spain, highlighting issues such as difficulties in covering regular expenses, limited savings buffers and exposure to debt across different socioeconomic groups. The session will also analyse the main driving forces behind financial vulnerability. Finally, the session will briefly consider some policy measures and social protection initiatives that aim to support financially vulnerable households and improve their financial resilience.
